It in autumn, early autumn in my part of the world. Although days are still warm by English standard one can feel the smell of autumn in the air. I will confess. I love autumn, adore the abundance of products in the garden and in the wilderness, always enjoy the crisp air first thing in the morning and the gentle warmth in the afternoon.
This is when my peasant roots start whispering - winter is not far away start planning, start preparing your preserves, chutneys, syrups and more. It’s time to collect, preserve, can. Generations after generations relied on their own efforts, their own skills to put food on the table in the long, heavy winters when snow was separating their villages from any other locations for a long time. My ancestors had to be self sufficient - a skill we need to go back to nowadays given the challenging times we are living in.
This is also a time to think about herbs, berries and start making some tinctures, elixirs, learn about alternative healing methods involving nature and its gifts.
It is a learning curve for me something I am happy to share with the ones who want to follow the path of self sufficiency and self healing. It is not a race but a marathon and we will make tiny steps together.
The neighbourhood I am living in at the moment qualifies as rural. It is a place where I can pick blackberries from bushes across the street, pick fresh rose petals from my neighbours’s gardens, apples, pears, plums and so much more.
About 2 months ago I was mindlessly scrolling instagram and came across rose elixir. Somebody, somewhere was making rose elixir and those words ignited my curiosity. This is how things happen in my life … I see something, read something and … the muse says …. let’s go and do it together. And when the muse speaks, I follow.
The words self love were attached to rose elixir and … who doesn’t need self love in a world where we re being made to believe we are not enough, where we are trained or brainwashed to chase and chase some more the elusive happiness outside ourselves? I surely need this so … hey ROSE ELIXIR here I come.
Do I have roses in my small garden? Nope but many neighbours do. Let me tell you something! It is fascinating to see how interested people are in … unusual ideas and projects. My rose elixir opened up lots of conversations, invitations to tea and of course rose petals.
So what do you need in order to make rose elixir?
Rose petals
Honey
Vodka
Jar
You don’t need any special skill really. If I can do it, you can do it. Pick up the jar, fill it 1/3 with rose petals, add 1/3 honey and the rest vodka. You are almost there. Cover the jar and shake it every day for there next 2 weeks. Store the jar in a dark place for 8 weeks and after that decant the liquid in a dark coloured bottle. It will last a longtime - a year and even more. You only need to take 3-5 drops twice a day.
Rose elixir uplifts us, brings warmth to the heart space, calms the nervous system, reduces inflammation, energetically heals trauma. It is a gentle support for your soul and body. Try it! You can do it!
